Staff and students from the Creative Media department at St Helens College rallied together to raise funds for national charity, The Cystic Fibrosis Trust, to support crucial research.

The students, dressed in bright yellow, travelled across the College with cake trolley in tow, to sell delicious cakes and biscuits, generously donated by the local Tesco superstore in St Helens and raffle tickets, to win a family ticket to the first game of the rugby season, gifted by Saints RLFC.

Reflecting on the event, Megan Downey, who is currently in her first year of the level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Creative Digital Media Production, said, “Our charity day was a huge success! Not only did we do something great for an amazing cause but we bonded as a team. I enjoyed walking around the College selling cakes to other students and staff as I was able to meet new people, which pushed me out of my comfort zone.”

Students also had the opportunity to put their creative skill set to use to create a short film highlighting the activities that took place during the event and to capture photography.

Second Year student, Paige Ollerhead, documented the day by taking over St Helens College’s Instagram page. She said, “Having the opportunity to take part in the campaign side of the fundraiser was really interesting for me as it gave me the opportunity to experience how to promote such an important event through social media. Everyone enjoyed the charity event and we all worked very hard to raise as much money as we possibly could! It was a very special day.”

Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a life-limiting genetic condition affecting more than 10,000 people across the UK. It affects the lungs and digestive system and can cause chronic infections and reduced lung function. Currently, half of those with CF will not live past age 41. One in 25 of us are born with the CF gene so we may be carrying the condition without even knowing.

The Cystic Fibrosis Trust is fighting for a brighter future for people with CF and their families by funding cutting-edge research, driving up standards of care and supporting people with the condition and their loved ones every step of the way.

Nicola Pearce, Creative Media Tutor at St Helens College, said, “I have been overwhelmed at the support we’ve received from Tesco and from Saints. The students have worked incredibly hard and I am so happy we have been able to raise money for the CF Trust and this important cause.”

At the end of the successful event, staff and students raised an incredible £434.41 from their cake and raffle ticket sale, including lots of online donations.
