St Helens College is set to bring together local logistics industry heavyweights as it hosts a careers and jobs event which will raise awareness of careers and qualifications in logistics, transport, warehousing and connected industries.

Taking place on Wednesday 5th October, 2pm – 7pm in St Helens, the event comes as the College, in partnership with Knowsley Community College, is gearing up to launch a brand new £3million Northern Logistics Academy – a project approved late last year by the Liverpool City Region’s growth deal fund in a bid to help close a growing skills shortage.

Spanning multiple industries, the discipline of logistics, transport, warehousing and driving covers hundreds of career options choices with excellent prospects emerging locally in a large and expanding sector. Almost every organisation requires some form of logistics expertise from managing a supply chain to transporting goods and/or passengers to worldwide destinations.

Individuals, old and young, interested in finding out more about a career in logistics, transport and warehousing are invited to attend the event. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet companies including Wincanton, Matalan, Jungheinrich, Abbey Logistics, Suttons and many more. Careers advisors and mentors will also be on hand with information about qualifications in the sector including representatives from the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) and the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply (CIPS).

Jette Burford, Principal of St Helens College commented: “The logistics sector is currently suffering a skills shortage in order to meet the demands generated by the expansion of the Liverpool City Region Superport. The new Northern Logistics Academy will prepare a generation of local residents to be well-equipped to grasp the many career opportunities becoming available in logistics. The event is a terrific opportunity for local people to take the first step towards a fulfilling career in this growing industry.

“There are huge misconceptions that jobs in logistics are just about driving but this really isn’t true. I would encourage local residents of all ages to drop in at any time during the event to just find out more. Lots of information about job vacancies, courses, training and apprenticeships will be on hand, as well as opportunities to meet leading employers and our expert careers advisers and mentors.”

The event will take place on Wednesday 5th October, 2.00pm – 7.00pm at the College’s Town Centre Campus Library, Water Street, St Helens WA10 1PP. For more information, please visit www.sthelens.ac.uk
