Hugh Baird College hosted their second annual Hands on Industry event last week, offering school pupils the chance to learn about different industries and the potential careers they can offer.

With a focus on the sectors identified by the Liverpool City Region Local Enterprise Partnership as priority growth areas for the local economy, employers from the construction and renewable energy industries were amongst the stand-holders. Complete Site Inspection Limited demonstrated some of the safety equipment used on construction sites, whilst Carillion were on hand to give information on the skills and training required for the various careers in construction.

More than a hundred and fifty 14-16 year olds visited the event from schools across the region. They were able to try their hands at activities directly linked to job related skills, such as tiling, wallpapering, special effects make up and carpentry and joinery. The College’s own L20 Hotel School were guiding visitors in the art of making chocolate fondue and the L20 Flowers team were giving demonstrations in flower arranging.

Tom Powell, Director at Complete Site Safety Limited said:

“As a company, we’re well aware of our responsibility to help and assist local communities to access roles across the Oil, Gas, Renewable Energy and Construction industries. Exhibiting at Hugh Baird College’s Hands on Industry Event has allowed us to enthuse the workforce of the future and give them an understanding of potential career paths within emerging markets.”

The Hands on Industry event is just one of a programme of activities offered by the College’s School Liaison team throughout the year, all aimed at helping young people find the best courses for progressing towards their chosen career. We link with schools to provide course tasters, college tours and guidance interviews, so, if you would like to talk about the options available, contact Tom Webb, School Liaison Coordinator on 0151 353 4560 or email thomas.webb@hughbaird.ac.uk.
