Hugh Baird College hosted their third annual Hands on Industry event last week, offering school pupils the chance to learn about different industries and the potential careers the College can offer.

With a focus on the sectors identified by the Liverpool City Region Local Enterprise Partnership as priority growth areas for the local economy, employers from the construction and visitor economy industries were amongst stand holders who provided guidance to local young people on the day.

Close to two hundred 14-16 year olds visited the event from schools across the region. They were able to try their hands at activities directly linked to job related skills, such as tiling, wallpapering, special effects make up and woodwork.

Hugh Baird College’s Sports department were also on hand to offer demonstrations of coaching and performance monitoring, whilst Public Service students highlighted the wide range of career opportunities available in the armed forces. Students from Hugh Baird College’s Travel and Tourism department welcomed visitors aboard Hugh Baird Airways and taught them the airline safety drill and customer service techniques in a mock airline cabin.

The Hands on Industry event is just one of a programme of activities offered by the College’s School Liaison team throughout the year, all aimed at helping young people find the best courses for progressing towards their chosen career.

The College’s School Liaison Team are happy to provide young people from local schools or those who are home schooled, the opportunity to undertake subject area tasters, college tours and the team can also provide guidance interviews or mock interviews.

School teachers or individuals with responsibility for the welfare of young people interested in linking with the College to broaden career prospects, are encouraged to contact Tom Webb, Hugh Baird College School Liaison Coordinator on 0151 353 4560 or email thomas.webb@hughbaird.ac.uk.
