Staff and students from the BA (Hons) Fine Art Painting degree at University Centre St Helens are busy planning and preparing an exclusive three-day exhibition, which will be open to the public during the first week of April.

Based in the Pilkington Gallery, Heart of Glass in St Helens, the popular BA2 exhibition, now in its tenth year, will showcase the impressive work of second year BA (Hons) Fine Art Painting students, as they approach the end of their penultimate year of study.

Providing an invaluable opportunity for students to experience the professional practice of preparing for, in many instances, their first public display of work, the exhibition is designed to demonstrate their ability, professionalism and wealth of thematic and conceptual knowledge.

Wayne Robinson, Programme Leader for the BA (Hons) Fine Art Painting degree, commenting ahead of the exhibition, said, “The students have worked incredibly hard to ensure that the BA2 exhibition is a great success, including working together and independently to cover the smallest of details, from the selection of their work through to its placement in the gallery space in order to create maximum impact. We hope that the exhibition truly inspires friends, family and the general community as much as it has inspired the department as a whole.”

Exhibiting student, Katherine, said, “I am really looking forward to seeing how people respond to my work at the exhibition, as I am hoping that it will highlight my potential as a painter. This amazing opportunity has helped me to understand what life as a practising industry artist will be like in the future in terms of the exhibition process and working with an artistic team to ensure a successful show. It has also inspired me to apply to art exhibitions in the local area.”

She added, “My time so far at University Centre St Helens, with the support of seminars, lectures, painting workshops and the wider lecturing team, has allowed me to discover who I am as an artist and what I want to achieve.” The BA (Hons) Fine Art Painting degree at University Centre St Helens is one of only a select few in the UK of its type, which allows students to study in a specialist environment from the first day of study. Affording each student their own individual gallery space for the duration of their studies, the degree enables students to find and study an individual style, whilst providing a deeper understanding of established painting principles. Places are still available to join the BA (Hons) Fine Art Painting degree this September.

The exhibition takes place at the Pilkington Gallery, Heart of Glass, St Helens from 10.00am to 4.00pm daily (except Friday, 10.00am – 12 noon). Running from Tuesday 2nd April 2019 to Friday 5th April 2019, the exhibition is free to attend. We welcome visits from school groups and members of the public.
