The L20 Hotel School at Hugh Baird College and its L20 Restaurant are celebrating this week after receiving a host of prestigious awards including a coveted ‘Highly Commended’ from the AA College Rosettes scheme, a Gold Accreditation and Centre of Excellence Award from People 1st.

The AA College Rosette Scheme, developed by People 1st and AA Hotel Services, recognises college restaurants for the quality of the food they produce, the level of service they deliver and the level of industry links the organisation have that benefit students and raise standards.

The People 1st’s hospitality accreditations and Centre of Excellence Award recognise colleges that deliver excellence in hospitality training.

Hugh Baird College is the first College in the Liverpool City Region to achieve a Gold Accreditation and to be awarded the Centre of Excellence status.

In his report, AA Inspector Garry Baldwin commented on a “truly commercial thinking environment where learners form key roles.” He also added that the L20 Restaurant was “very much at the top end of the College Rosette Award scheme and was clearly developing and improving current industry trends and standards.”

L20 Hotel School Curriculum Coordinator for Hospitality and Catering, Stephen Otty, said:

“To be the first college in the region to be awarded a Gold Accreditation and named as a Centre of Excellence really does recognise the hard work we put in to making Hugh Baird College and the L20 Hotel School the place to come if you want to progress with a career in the hospitality and catering industry.”

“To also receive a Highly Commended status and be one of only a few college’s nationally to have received this award is testament to the skills and commitment our students and staff demonstrate on a daily basis.”

Hugh Baird College and L20 Hotel School student, Ricky Mears, said:

“I feel really proud to be a student here and to be part of the L20 Hotel School. To work as part of such a great team in such a high end working environment as the L20 Restaurant gives me that added experience that will help me stand out when I start my career.”

Hugh Baird College Principal and Chief Executive, Yana Williams added:

“I am delighted for the students and staff of the L20 Hotel School both past and present. The school was launched to address the hospitality skills gap of the ever growing Visitor Economy of the Liverpool City Region and we continue to do this in spectacular style year on year.”

“I would also like to thank the array of chefs and employers from the industry who have given their time so generously to help develop our students and the L20 Hotel School brand since the school was launched.”

“The L20 Hotel School and the L20 Restaurant demand the highest industry standards on a daily basis. Receiving these awards is proof that the working environment we have created for our students is ensuring they are fully prepared and equipped to move seamlessly on to work in the city’s top restaurants.”
