Over 50 Travel & The Visitor Economy students from Hugh Baird College have their fingers crossed that they will soon be embarking on their dream careers in the Visitor Economy after attending a jobs fair at Manchester Airport on January 13, 2016.
With more than 70 airlines offering direct flights from Manchester to over 210 destinations worldwide, the Manchester Airport has experienced an impressive period of significant growth and over 23 million people now use the airport annually.
The airport is already one of the largest centres of employment in the North West with more than 21,500 people directly employed on site, supporting a further 45,000 jobs in the region and with around 2,500 jobs up for grabs at the Jobs Fair, the students used all the skills they have learnt whilst attending the array of Visitor Economy related courses available at Hugh Baird College.
There were 26 employers in attendance at the Jobs Fair in order to recruit for the variety of roles now available at the airport. These included: Airport security, Check-in, Baggage handlers, Cabin crew, Retail, Hospitality, Aircraft dispatchers, Engineering, Drivers, Customer service staff and receptionists.
Employers in attendance included Manchester Airport themselves, World Duty Free Group, SwissPort, The Nuance Group, Costa Coffee, WH Smith, Aviator, Menzies Aviation, Holiday Inn Express, Jet2.com and Jet2Holidays.
Janet Trigg, Assistant Principal for Vocational Studies at Hugh Baird College said:
“The Visitor Economy is a huge growth area for the North West of England and especially for the Liverpool City Region. The city region’s visitor economy now supports more than 49,000 jobs and generates income in excess of £3.8bn and Liverpool attracts almost 54m day visitors annually, and the number of staying visitors has risen to 4.8m. Our curriculum offer here at Hugh Baird College has responded to this growth area of our local economy and we ensure that our learners experience regular placements with key employers in this sector. I was delighted to hear the feedback from the students who attended the Jobs Fair. A number are hopeful of hearing back from employers inviting them for interviews.”
Bethany O’Grady from West Derby, who is studying on the Level 2 Cabin Crew and Travel and Tourism course said:
“The Jobs Fair was amazing! It was brilliant to hear from so many employers. I am hoping that I will hear back from Jet2.com, they seemed to be really impressed by what I’d learnt on my College course.”
