On Monday 27 June 2016, LCR LEP and City of Liverpool College hosted an event as part of ‘The Edge’ – the official fringe festival of the International Festival for Business 2016. ‘Your Digital Future’ was a celebration of Liverpool City Region’s thriving digital and creative scene and a chance for employers, students and thought-leaders within the sector to come together and look at imminent challenges, opportunities, disruptive technology and the future demand for digital skills. The event also featured the announcement that City of Liverpool College would be the first institution to receive ‘Microsoft Associate College’ in the UK. Over 100 local businesses, students and other interested parties saw presentations from Microsoft Research about cutting edge technology which is making life easier for people, including instant audio translation services and glasses which describe the environment in their field of view for people with visual impairments. The crowd also saw a glimpse into the future of education and work thanks to a Futurist from JISC sharing insights, followed by presentations from local companies PLEQ and Draw and Code who are operating in the industrial preventative maintenance and AR/VR spheres respectively. Afterwards, the audience were free to engage with exhibiting local businesses, participate in a panel discussion around future skills and checkout the Microsoft Showcase Classroom which features groundbreaking technology designed to improve the learning and teaching experience.
