The region is a global hub for R&D and biopharmaceutical manufacturing, with particular focus on:

  • Precision medicine/’omics
  • Infectious diseases
  • Children’s health
  • Independent living

Liverpool City Region has a strong research intensive Higher Education base that brings together leading life sciences and medical research with sophisticated facilities to support precision medicine/’omics, infectious disease and other areas.

The region is also one of the largest biopharmaceutical manufacturing clusters in Europe with major companies such as Astra Zeneca, Seqirus, Eli Lilly and Actavis, and a rapidly expanding commercial R&D community, including one of the largest clusters of eHealth companies. The region provides a range of incubation and other facilities for SMEs and large companies. Life sciences/medical activities with industry and academia employ 6-10,000 (depending on the definition used).

Healthcare sector employs approximately 108,000 people (~17% workforce), with Liverpool being home to more specialist hospitals and health centres than any other UK city outside London. Research and innovation is central to NHS and social care activities locally, with a number of organisations facilitating the deployment of new technologies.

The Liverpool City Region LEP and partners support the growth of the health and life sciences sectors.
