The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust

The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest cancer centres in the UK, providing expert specialist care to a population of 2.3m people across Merseyside and Cheshire as well as carrying out ground breaking research and clinical trials.

Our academic oncology unit is expanding year on year with highly research-active consultants who hold joint appointments with the University of Liverpool. Operating from 10 sites and employing over 1,000 staff, we are the leading providers of non-surgical cancer care including pioneering chemotherapy and other systemic anti-cancer treatments such as molecular agents and immunotherapies.

Our radiotherapy facilities are among the most advanced in the UK, with extremely precise and sophisticated linear accelerators, brachytherapy, and stereotactic radiosurgery. We have the UK’s only eye proton therapy service, providing highly accurate treatment for rare eye tumours that can mean patients don’t need to have the eye removed. We also provide Papillon radiotherapy for early rectal cancers. We are consistently one of the best-performing trusts in patient and staff surveys and clinical outcomes and have the best possible rating from Monitor, the foundation trust regulator.

In addition to our main base in Wirral, we have a purpose-built radiotherapy centre in Aintree and an extensive network of chemotherapy and outpatient clinics in other hospitals. These include the Linda McCartney Centre at the Royal Liverpool, the Marina Dalglish Units at Aintree University Hospital and at Southport Hospital, Broadgreen Hospital, The Countess of Chester Hospital, CanTreat at Halton Hospital, Liverpool Women’s Hospital, and St Helen’s Hospital. We are committed to providing treatment close to home for our patients, wherever possible.

Our proposals for Transforming Cancer Care will see us significantly expand and further improve as we open our major new specialist cancer hospital in the heart of Liverpool. The new Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, to be built next to the Royal Liverpool University Hospital and the University of Liverpool, will become our main base when it opens in 2018/19. It will enable us to provide even better care for the most seriously ill patients as it will have on-site access to intensive care and other key medical and surgical specialities, and will also mean we can work even more closely with researchers from the university, NHS and other key partners. We will also continue to provide services at Wirral, Aintree and our other sites.

The Clatterbridge Cancer Charity

The work of the hospital and its vision for the coming years is supported by a dedicated charity, The Clatterbridge Cancer Charity. The money raised funds vital research, equipment and support services that may otherwise be unavailable. These range from supporting Transforming Cancer Care, to new innovations in cancer treatment and the special touches that really help to change lives. The charity is now calling on the people of Liverpool, Wirral, Cheshire and beyond to be a part of this once in a generation appeal and give the people of the future the best possible cancer hospital we can build.
