High Speed Rail

Liverpool City Region LEP has been at the forefront of the campaign to bring a High Speed connection to Liverpool representing the private sector voice all across the City Region.

It is the LEP commissioned economic forecasts that have proven the economic case.  A high speed rail connection to Liverpool will add £8.3bn to the City Region economy and create at least 14,000 jobs in addition to increasing property development and regeneration in the City. Without our work, the case simply wouldn’t exist.

The LEP has also been at the front-line of the argument that High Speed Rail is about capacity and connectivity and not just about speed; it is the LEPs arguments about freight and logistics capacity need that has moved Government to focus more specifically on the need for High Speed Rail to enable freight growth, and not act as a potential barrier.  No organisation has had as much influence with the LEP having made its representations to the High Speed 2 Ltd Board, Chair, Growth task Force, DfT Permanent Secretary, and Secretary of State – all of whom have come to Liverpool specifically to meet with the Liverpool City Region LEP.

As a partnership campaign, ‘High Speed Rail- Linking Liverpool’ is the collective effort to bring High Speed Rail to the City. The campaign builds on a range of work by partners in the City Region including the Combined Authority, Merseytravel, the LEP, Liverpool City Council and the business-led 20 Miles More campaign group. It has its own website and supporting Twitter account @Hsrliverpool
